| The accompanying CD is the most important component. It is a recording of various native speakers chanting or reciting to the beat of congas, bongos, tambourines and other instruments. Also included are recordings of the rhythms alone, without voices. These non-voiced rhythms are to be used for the teachers’ or the students’ variations or original chants. |
Each chant includes:
- Scripts: All verses of all Canti.
- Da Scrivere: These pages are just like the scripts, but have strategically spaced blanks. These sheets may be sued for listening activities before the Canto is recited, or as a partial dictation exercise, or as a cloze activity.
- Esercizi: The Canti have various types of exercises that go along with many of the themes or grammar points expressed in the Canti. Some suggest ways to vary the Canti, or to further expand the students’ vocabulary or communicative abilities.

Canti, Rimi e Rime teaches and reinforces Italian through chants set to catchy tunes or penetrating beats. The chants teach both thematic topics, (such as family, weather, house, occupations and more) and also grammatical points like commands, prepositions, object pronouns, past tense with essere and avere. These Canti are catchy and fun, but more importantly, they are extremely effective.
for 5th – 12th grades
Four categories of Canti, Ritmi e Rime are featured:
- Thematic – Many of the chants have been developed around a vocabulary theme such as weather, house, family, etc.
- Grammatical – Certain grammatical structures that defy learning via drill conversation or other methods are learned quickly and effortlessly through rhythm and repetition. This collection includes a popular verb conjugation chant, chants with verbs with essere, commands, formation of regular and irregular plurals, verb comparisons and more.
- General – Many chants or rhythms reinforce general vocabulary and grammar points instead of any specific ones. They are cross-categorical.
- Traditional – Also included in this collection are some traditional Italian rhymes (not included on the CD,) chosen for their wide appeal, simplicity and suitability for the classroom.
